On the Metro...

Traveling on the metro (the city train network) is a part of everyday life here in Kiev. Occasionally this brings situations of hilarity. For example when in peak hour people try to pack themselves into train cars resulting in getting themselves, their handbags or coats stuck in the closing doors! Just yesterday a more sobering experience happened in the metro... we were nearing the end of the terribly long escalator trip at Pecherska when we saw an (very) elderly woman moving towards the large red gas (maybe something to do with a fire extinguisher) cylinders that were tottering on a small trolley. We both thought, 'She's not going to sit on that, is she? She'd fall off for sure!' Just as we got to the bottom of the escalator she sat down. And in one movement and cry she fell to the ground. After helping her up, she tottered off not wanting any more help, but rubbing her sore hip. It's times like these when knowing more of their language would really help, but then again the woman didn't want any help from the two Ukrainians who were also there.
